Plunge Saws

Reasons one might need a plunge saw: cabinet cutting, cutting flooring material, fitting kitchen countertops, woodworking with resin, and more.

Any vintage brown cover woodworking book can give you more ideas.

They are typically used by carpenters for detailed cutting in a straight line with 99.99 % accuracy. But you’ll find many benefits of using a plunge saw. We’ll get to the main advantage in a moment.

Why Buy Plunge Saws from UK Planet Tools?

You can’t just buy plunge saws with a cord here, there are also cordless track saws to try, like the Milwaukee FUEL saw!

And if the price isn’t quite right, or you’ve seen a better one elsewhere, you can request a quote for the best price we can offer or choose to compensate in instalments. The service here is excellent too – come on down to our Milton Keynes showroom if you don’t believe us. We’re based in Bletchley.

Cordless Plunge Saws in the UK

The perk of using a cordless plunge saw in the UK is that you can use one on a remote site without a plug.

For instance, you’re on a UK workshop site and there are no plug sockets around you. That won’t be a problem with a wireless unit. All you’ll have to worry about is charging the cut saw up before you leave – which with many of the fast chargers we sell, won’t take long at all.

The run time should also do you good for a day’s work. But this depends on the model you choose. The more you spend, the better the performance.

Types of Plunge Saws

There’s nothing but power, power, power with these handheld brushless tools! No matter what model you opt for, whether Draper, Festool or Erbauer, trimming wood has never been smoother!

  • Corded plunge saws: These tracksaw tools are super powerful but are not the best for isolated work sites as they need to be used with a plug.
  • Cordless plunge saws: Often compatible with 18V li-ion batteries, these tools pair cordless convenience with the power of corded.
  • Mini plunge saws: A small blade gives access to tight spaces, which is why users would benefit from a compact saw. It's also lightweight and comfortable to hold.
  • Track-compatible plunge saws: These models are made to work with guide rails or tracks for perfectly straight, splinter-free cuts.
  • Multi-material plunge saws: Use these special plunge saws for cutting through many different materials e.g. wood, metal, plastic and tile.
  • Industrial-grade saws: Best for large-scale projects and professional high-volume woodworking, these heavy duty saws cut thick or dense materials.

IMPORTANT: Always use a dust protector when operating these machines!

Finding Your Perfect Cordless Plunge Saw

Buying quality doesn’t always mean buying an expensive saw! Woodworking lovers can find the cordless track saw they’ve been wanting by using our handy filters. This helps you to find something within budget, fast. Mafell does a great range, for example.

Join the conversation on the best plunge saws by using your very own after speedy delivery.

Exclude the tools in your kit that don’t get much attention e.g. your old cheap Lidl tools and give them to someone who will get good use out of them as you embrace your new upgrade.

FAQ about Plunge saws

You are inches away from your new track saw for site use! First, check these handy FAQs.

What is a plunge saw used for?

A plunge saw is for when you need to make a completely straight cut in woodworking and construction projects. You cannot sand with one.

DIYers can use these tools, but they are more universally used by the pros. The blades can usually tilt, meaning they can be used for bevel cuts at all different angles. Cool, huh?!

That’s not all: trim doors, panels, and floor pieces – even in confined spaces – with accuracy and safety, thanks to the guide rail and integrated dust extraction. Fox Chapel Publishing sell some helpful woodworking books for tips on what projects to undertake.

Tools I’ve tested cut common materials like black and grey laminate, 8x4 MDF, metal sheet goods and melamine (with the right saw blade). A 54V model will cut most effectively.

What's the difference between a plunge saw and a circular saw?

To a rookie or DIY user, a plunge saw and circular saw might seem to do the same job. But to a professional, the differences are stark.

With a plunge saw, there is greater precision, easier plunge and depth control (as the machine is designed specifically for plunge cutting) and reduced splintering: especially with saw guide rails as opposed to the length of angle iron as a substitute.

They display better results and are more convenient since you can cut in the middle of materials without needing an initial opening with another tool.

What is another name for a plunge saw?

Sometimes, a plunge saw can also be called a track saw.

You’ll find many items listed as both in the title. No worries if it is one or the other though: they’ll do the same thing!

Just make sure it has a guide rail for more accurate cuts. Triton does a good one that you can get as a pack of two. Get the right accessories, too, like shank router bits. Paired with these, plunge saws outperform standard saws by up to 4x in efficiency and ease of use!
